The parts in this parts manual are grouped according to their location in the tractor. Each group is preceded by an “exploded view” which clearly illustrates each pan in its correct relation to the other parts in the illustration. The following is a brief summary of the simplified system used in compiling this parts manual. It is to your benefit to study this summary carefully.

(1) Parts Numbers. In cases where the part number suifix letters have been advanced, the new part will replace the old unless otherwise indicated. For example: Valve lower bracket, 45 948 DB will work for 45 948 D or DA.

(2) Illustrations. The “exploded views” of each unit show the individual pans clearly and in their proper relationship to each other. This method of illustrating makes it easy to locate parts, whether they are ordered by description or part number. Reference numbers only are shown in each illustration. Parts in the illustrations without reference numbers are the same as corresponding parts with reference numbers. These □umbers correspond to those in the reference number column in the numerical list of parts which follows each “exploded view.”

(3) Method of Listing. The parts list is divided into groups corresponding to units in the tractor. Parts are listed in order according to reference number shown in illustration, followed by a full description based upon the “noun first” method—i.e., the noun name oi the part is listed first, then the modifying descriptive information which serves to specifically identify the item. A serial number is also given when necdea for further identification. The right-hand column shows the quantity required per tractor. All parts for which no serial number is shown will work on all tractors from the first tractor built.

In the engine sections, the prefix “C-264” will precede the serial number (when used) to indicate that the part is used on a carbureted engine within a certain serial number range. The prefix “D-264” will precede the serial number (when used) to indicate that the part is used on a Diesel engine within a certain serial number range.

Throughout the Chassis and Attachment sections of this parts manual, serial numbers will be shown for parts which are used only on tractors within a certain serial number range. Prefix letters shown on page 2 will precede the serial numbers only when these parts are used on a specific tractor model. Parts listed without serial numbers will apply to all models of tractors covered in this parts manual unless otherwise specified.

(4) Partial Assemblies and Complete Assemblies. You will find that some of the numbers are followed by the letters “X” or “Y’\ The suffix letter “X” indicates an assembly of parts which may be either a partial or a complete assembly. The suffix letter “Y,” in nearly all cases, indicates a complete assembly.

You will also find some numbers are followed by the suffix Rll (one, one) through R89 (eight, nine) and R91 (nine, one) through R99 (nine, nine). The suffix Rll indicates an assembly of parts which may be either a partial or a complete assembly. (Compa- rable to the above system using “X.”) The suffix R91, in nearly all cases, indicates a complete assembly. (Comparable to the above system using “Y.”) For example: 357 252 Rll cylinder head with studs and valve guides is a partial assembly. However, it is necessary to issue a new part number, 357 251 R91, which represents the foregoing with valves and springs added, and is a complete assembly.

Items consisting of two or more components not serviced separately are so supplied because disassembly of tne components is considered impractical. Component parts of assemblies are listed immediately following the assembly itself, excepting those maae up of less than four parts, which are fully covered by description. In cases where the individual parts of an assembly arc not available for service, those parts are marked with the symbol §. In some instances, such individual parts arc shown in the “Unit Lists” with a notation giving the part Dumber which is to be used when ordering. For example: “12 329 DA—steering knuckle arm ball (order 9 035 DBXA).”

(5) Abbreviation*. The abbreviations used in this parts manual arc explained in the list of abbreviations on page 7.

(6) Index. On pages 8 and 9 you will find an alphabetical index which is divided into six classifica- tions: Carbureted Engine, Diesel Engine, Electrical System, Chassis, Hydraulic System ana Attachments. This index should be used to locate unit lists and illus- trations. A numerical index at the back of the parts manual contains a complete list of pares, showing the page numbers where each part is listed and described.

(7) Standard Parts. The “Attaching” items—such as standard bolts, screws, nuts, etc.—arc indented, aod listed under the respective individual parts with which they are used. They should be ordered by “Part Number,” description and size, as they are not com- ponent parts of the pieces they attach. Hardware parts having special part numbers are especially made Jot their location and should never be substituted with regular standard parts.

(8) Serial Numbers end Letters. Following is a list of prefixes and letters which precede the serial num- bers for these tractors:

Farmall Super M Series
(F-501 to F-52627 and L.500001 to L-512541)
Tractor Model / Engine Serial Prefix / Chassis (or Tractor) Serial Letter
Super M / C-264 / SM
Super MV / C-264 / SMV
Super MD / D-264 / SMD
Super MDV / D-264 / SMDV

Farmall Super M-TA Series (60001 up)
Tractor Model / Engine Serial Prefix / Chassis (or Tractor) Serial Letter
Super M-TA (Carbureted) / C-264 / SM-TA
Super M-TA (Carbureted-High Clearance) / C-264 / SM-TAV
Super M-TA (Diesel) / D-264 / SM-TAD
Super M-TA (Diesel-High Clearance) / D-264 / SM-TADV

Carbureted engine serial numbers are stamped on a pad on the. right side of the engine crankcase above the Battery Ignition Unit, preceded by model designa- tion C-264, cast on the engine crankcase. Diesel engine serial numbers are stamped on the left side of the engine crankcase above the injection pump, pre- ceded by model designation D-264. The chassis (or Tractor) serial numbers, with model designation, for all these tractors arc stamped on the name plate on the left side of the clutch housing. Super “M” and Super “MV” tractors equipped with Liquefied Petroleum Gas Burning Engines will be identified by the letters “L” added to the model on the serial number plate as follows: SML or SMVL. Though each of these tractor models have separate chassis serial letters, the serial numbers for these tractors run concurrently. However, no attempt was made to have the engine and chassis serial numbers correspond. Customers should be urged to supply you with engine and tractor chassis serial numbers—including prefix and suffix letters—when ordering parts. A serial number suffix letter code has been assigned to identify parts which replace standard parts or units when tractors have special features which differ from standard equipment. Full details concerning the suffix letter code may be found on page 453.
